How has the "Publish or Perish" mantra; which has become the convention in most higher institutions of learning, affected you (positively or negatively) in your academic career?
If one can do the Ph D sincerely there would be no dearth of papers in future. Even the MSS can improved more and more with the availability of additional relevant data.
Its a two edged sword of motivation to solve problems and the urge to bend down the rigor of science.
Research expedition should be based on expressed will that solves problems. It should not be driven by employment survival reasons and promotions as it has been the case in many higher institutions. This is the reason why we have a high number of less standard academic researches churned out in our times.
It does affect everyone in research position: grants, tenure, income is tight to the publication activity, number+IF. But the good part of motivating researchers to be active as early in their career as possible must be balanced by careful management of the performance indicators, otherwise “publish or perish” is a sheer tyrany where no quality considerations, or real research activity is fostered.
