Patenting before publishing is wise because patent protects an invention. One who plans to patent will obviously do so after cost benefit analysis because the cost of the process to get the patent can be outrageous.

I think the choice between the two depends on specialization, for my specialize, the accounting research is preferred to be published in a reputed high IF journal
I think it depends on the type of research work and specializations. Patent is better as it reserve or protect researchers work. On the other hand published research with a reputed high IF journal might be also good
A patent and an article are fundamentally different types of publications. The majority of articles cannot be issued as a patent application, since these do not meet the main requirements for patent applications - the presence of patent novelty, non-obviousness and applicability in industry.
Moreover, in order for the issued patents to work (and the patent application does not turn into a patent always), it must be supported, i.e. to pay. Those, a more or less successful company must be interested in a patent. It all looks obvious.
