I will be working with the two antibiotics spectinomycin and gentamycin in bacterial culture media, but I am unsure if I can destroy them by autoclaving and pour the media down the sink or if I need to dispose of the media as chemical waste?
The NIH Drain Discharge Guide says gentamycin can be inactived by autoclaving, as well as streptomycin, but doesn't list spectinomycin. However, I remember reading elsewhere that gentamycin is quite heat stable and can be autoclaved.
As for spectinomycin, the only information I could find was in a paper where they used alkaline-thermal treatment to degrade spectinomycin mycelial residues, and it was not destroyed with only thermal treatment at 90*C, but the study did not include autoclavation.
Anyone have additional information?
