Scientists and ethicists are reacting to the news that a suspected serial killer and rapist was tracked down using a consumer DNA database. The trail of the ‘Golden State Killer’ had been cold for decades, until police uploaded crime-scene DNA evidence to a free website called GEDmatch. The move led to an arrest last week. The case is raising questions about how consumer DNA may be accessed by law enforcement. “I’ve had many sleepless nights the last few years, realizing that it’s coming,” said genetic genealogist CeCe Moore.
