Most of the PhD graduates are aspirants of academic positions. What are the different career options outside academia for a PhD. graduates? How to motivate these young people to pursue a career other than academic positions, such as administration, industry, science writing, publishing etc.
It is unfortunate that many persons, who hold PhD degrees, generally opt for academic posts without realizing how much hard the teaching job is if it is to be done properly & honestly. After teaching for 36 years (3 for school level +33 for university level), my sincere advice to young PhD graduates is to try other more rewarding easier jobs. I have many stories to tell: A friend of mine, who had a degree in mechanical engineering, left the academia to work with an airline. He was given a better salary for 14 months/year & not 12 meager salaries/month as in academia. Another friend-economist- who retired from the university, with top offer of teaching one or two courses, as part-timer, with a turnout of 1000-2000 $/semester, established a business which gives him ~ 2000-4000 $/month. I met him, few months ago, and I told him: You look healthier & even more younger ! He said: That is because I am now free from the "headaches" coming from the university.
Counter question: why should Ph.Ds leave the academic field? The degree certifies to the academic world that you can perform independent research, that is, you are trained and qualified for an academic job. If you want to work in another field, why wasting time on a Ph.D. degree that is not really necessary?
I agree..but how to change the mind set of PhD graduates...there should be some seminars or information sessions in every semester during the PhD which provides all the information related to careers
