To judge the applicability of a semiconductor material as an active material of solar cells, the material must satisfy to main conditions:
Good photoelectric effect, in the sense that it must be sensitive to the incident solar radiation for high photocurrent, and
The capability to form an internal electric field and a potential barrier to high open circuit voltage.
The additional condition that it may have as small as possible resistance to avoid the ohmic losses of the generated electrical energy which means that it must give the highest fill factor.
