For fracture mechanics at some point you will have to implement your own element formulation or your material model. Ansys is very diffucult to implemet a user defined element or a user defined material. Abaqus is much better for both and also it is much easier to code with Abaqus.

Abaqus would be the better choice for fracture analysis. However if you want to model the crack propagation, you may try FRANC2D/3D, ViDA etc.

thanks for your suggestions, but what about using workbench instead of apdl and abaqus? I found that in ansys 14.5 workbench, there are direct tools for fracture parameters. are that tools effective ??? I couldn't found any documentation regarding this.

Ansys Workbench 14.5 is pretty user friendly for fracture analysis.U can insert crack at any location of the geometry .Predefined crack shape like eliptical ,semi elliptical available .Directly calculates SIF,J-Integral for the crack .Here is the document regarding Fracture Module

Abaqus will be a good choice. But I would like to add, please explain the problem in brief. As it will be better to use other software if you are dealing with cracks in a porous media, or where you can't justify the cantina hypothesis of material. But Abaqus has very good XFEM implementation.

i want to insert a semi elliptical crack in gas turbine disc and find out the fracture parametres j,g,k. i just started with ansys classic ( based on availability), i have gone through help manual in ansys and understood everything but i couldn't found out the steps regarding creating singular crack tip elements along the crack front in 3d model in ansys classic. but workbench has direct tools. has any one done this in ansys classic? can anyone share the document regarding the work done on crack in 3d model (ansys/wb/abaqus)?? detailed step by step of analysis would be great help. thanks in advance.

I had several 3D crack analysis in ANSYS APDL, The procedure to create a crack in a solid body is not explained at all in the official guide and I never found tutorials about that.

The procedure that I use is long and has to be well structured to be really undestood, moreover I developed the procedure in a parametric way so that a crack propagation (due to KI) can be made. Also the estrapolation of the results in a 3d crack is not immediate using both KCAL and CINT command. Confidence with ansys parametric language is needed.

On the other side Workbench is very user-friendly but it is not true that you can use the 'fracture tool' to define a crack everywhere, There are several limitations explained in the official guide.

One of the features I never tried in Workbench is the crack definition using pre-meshed crack.
