Many publishing houses are pushing Open Access leaving the author/subject matter expert without compensation. Is there a moral obligation for the educated to volunteer a year or more of their time just for the opportunity to publish? Or should those who have dedicated years to obtain their status be guaranteed fair and just compensation?

From my personal experience I never earned much money with the sale of my book, significantly more from the royalties. Open access is just another method to publish. there are online royalities as well. And it is important where to publish. (peer review, academic publisher etc.) And publishing is part of the job, which should be paid properly.
