Hi,

I'm culturing immortalized mouse podocyte cell lines. Currently at differentiation stage. As seen in image below, the blue circled regions are cells that are undifferentiated, while the red arrows indicate the regions where foot processes occur, which is an indication the cells are differentiating. however, the regions circled in yellow are cells with weird morphology.

I was wondering if somebody with experience dealing with cell lines could suggest the possible reasons for such a weird morphology. the incidence of such cells at the moment is maybe 1:100

Is it due to mechanical stress? (mechanical flushing of cells during trypsinaization-accidental 'scratching' of cells perhaps with the pipette?)

or god forbids, contamination with mycoplasma?
