Two stroke cycle engines and four stroke cycle engines comes as one of the classification of internal combustion engines. Two stroke cycle eg. scooters etc. are now converted to four stroke in the view for reducing fuel consumption, reducing emissions and increase of thermal efficiency. In the present scenario, where two stroke cycle engines are used and applicable?
2 stroke engines are almost obsolete. On-road vehicles - Racing carts have 2 stroke engines now. Whereas, maritime vessels use 2 stroke engines because of its high power, and also capability of burning low grade fuel. Also, power to area ratio, and power to cargo weight ratio is higher for 2 stroke than 4 stroke. Less wear tear due to low rpm , is another factor to consider 2 stroke.
I don't know if it is helpful for you, but besides large marine or some rail locomotives diesel engines, also very small engines for the aircraft models are still made as two-stroke.
2-stroke ICEs still have applications where their advantages (higher power per volume/weight, simplicity, eventually no separate oil circulation) outweigh their disadvantages (fuel consumption, emissions): Basically already mentioned, let me list anyway:
