The project was my idea, and I did the work independently. Since it wasn't my PI's idea, he's not excited about it. This is still a high-impact paper, and it's important to my career.
I might be able to submit it myself But I'm afraid if I do that, I'll burn a bridge. What can I do?
Hasn't the bridge already been burnt by your PI, Hajjaj? Or perhaps another way of saying it is, what future benefit do you anticipate gaining from this relationship when your PI has already demonstrated a lack of concern for your future career?
What you should be concerned with, from my perspective, is not maintaining this relationship, but finding a way to submit the manuscript without violating any ethical standards. For example, if the data is owned by your PI, then you will clearly need his/her permission to submit the manuscript. If not, perhaps your IRB can provide guidance on ethical means of bypassing your PI to submit the manuscript.
I do have the same concern as professorPeter kindle, it worth contacting him and offer that you will be responsible for the whole publication process
I am not sure what the real reason of your ex PI is to not go ahead.
You need to find out if it is just lack of time, interest or some other stuff (collaborators, IP, Author position, etc..)
Depending on the journal (e.g. J. Med. Chem.), you have the option to submit in the name of the corresponding author, which could be a good way to offer your ex PI a win-win situation without having any work.
