try out led strips.. u get water proof variants as well.... they have a glue on the back side and can be pasted on to any good clean surface... all you need to do get the led strips and a driver/adapter for the depending on the voltage rating of led and with a bit of soldering you are ready to go. you can adjust light intensities bu covering one or more LEDs in a strip and also arrange it in different formats/designs. If you want a timely control of light dark cycles, you can attach it to an electronic timer as well. It doe not cost much here in India. here is a link in case you are not aware of it..
Phototrophic bacteria includes anoxygenic as well as cyanobacteria. When former group is considered a transparent anaerobic jar is used which can be exposed to electric lamp of various wavelength. In case of later group sunlight is sufficient provided suitable media is employed in both the cases.
