I recently joined a public aquarium in the Netherlands (Aqua-Zoo Leerdam). I was confronted with a question that stymied the other keepers. We regularly buy eggs, mermaids purses, of a Bamboo shark, Chiloscyllium spec. from importers.

After an uneventful gestation they hatch without any apparent problem and feed well on shrimp and molluscs. Then, about 6 months after hatching and without any visible warning they take ill, lose balance and die within hours to a few days, with nicely rounded bellies. Several adults in the same tank show no stress or other problems. The fish are kept in a large, 5 or 6 meter aquarium with adequate protein-skimming. Since these deaths occured before my involvement, no water chemistry values are available at this time. Any insights to the causes of these sudden deaths or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated
