Microbial Fuel Cell? Why using Platinium in the cathode chamber?

Why we used Platinium in cathodechamber despite it is exepensive. What is fuction of the Platinium mineral. if used it for oxygen reduction then instead could put the cathode chamber under aerobic condition and get oxygen from open air directly.
