I am soon starting to analyse a comprehensive qualitative data set comprising of in-depth interviews with employees in a pioneer position in the fiel of health. Rather than applying an inductive approach to data analysis, I would be interested in using an abductive approach, examining data in the light of an existing theory. To my knowledge, theories are mostly tested using quantitative methods to confirm or reject a hypothesis.
Is there any method through which a theory can be confirmed/ disputed/expanded through qualitative data?
I am instantly thinking of coding data in accordance with key components of the theory, but my ideas are rather vague and I am looking for a methodologically rigorous way of producing valid and reliable results.
It might be important to add that the interviews were conducted using a semi-structured interview guide stimulating professionals to freely talk about their work, within which neither theory-driven questions, nor explicit theory related key words or topics were included.
Thanks in advance for any input that could lead me on the right track!
