I'm currently working on risk assessment of river basin to water pollution using GIS. However, I only find few previous studies(less than 10) that conducted surface water risk assessment via GIS. Most of the risk or vulnerability assessment (GIS) studies are conducted on groundwater, which DRASTIC is one of the most popular methods used in vulnerability and risk assessment.
Is there any method that I can use to assess surface water(river) risk to pollution? Or modified DRASTIC is applicable for river basin approach?
Any suggestion will be appreciated.

Many of the newer models are derived from the basic USLE of Wischmeier and Smith (1978). This equation is the result of empirical long-term runoff studies on test fields in the USA. It estimates the longterm annual soil loss in [tons/ha]. The formula consists of multiplied factors and is as follows: A = R*K*L*S*C*P The factors are: A: result: mean long-term annual soil loss in [tons/ha] R: rain and surface runoff factor K: soil erodibility factor L: slope length factor S: slope steepness factor C: vegetation cover factor P: erosion protection factor Methodology GIS was used to: – produce Hydrology maps using ARC/HYDRO. – produce rainfall map and pollution map using Geo-statistical analyst
– produce SLOPE & ASPECT using SPATIAL ANALYST & 3D – NPSP modeling RS (satellite images) was used to: produce Land Cover /Land use maps. Hello! I think geostatistics is the best option for you, because your universe of study is a random field of continuous phenomena, which is proper for its methods . The GIS tool associated with geostatistics becomes very powerful - note that GIS is good for maps and poor on statistics. Other option is to use the Random forest method. I also suggest you to use the R-program which has great computational packages for. I can help you with R, if you wish.
You are probably familiar with the WFD where we are classifying pressures and status of European waterbodies. In Northern Europe where we have many lakes (e.g. ca. 100 000 in Sweden and Finland) it is not economically or logistically feasible to sample all lakes, therefore we are focusing on identifying and quantifying probabilities of whether or not systems are affected by different pressures, and then subsampling lakes with lower weights given to areas with low pressures. Much of this work is being done using GIS.
Arc SWAT model is a good tool in watershed health assessment and performs better if it is an agricultural watershed.
