Generally speaking, methacrylates allow for crosslinking/polymerization of silk fibroins via different substitution, esterification, etc., reactions. There’s a difference in the reaction mechanisms based on the chemistry of what you’re working with. Methacrylic anhydride reactions with silk fibroin is more likely to produce acidic byproducts that ultimately have a negative effect on the silk fibroins/crosslinking. GMA tends to be more effective in producing the desired effect for crosslinking reactions. Hope that’s helps a little!
