Good day all,

I have been reading about MCDM and two of them have my attention for my study, TOPSIS, and AHP. However, I am confused with how to use both. I am trying to evaluate Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) treatments (landfill, incineration, gasification, and pyrolysis) with three criteria, Economic, technology, and environment.

In order to find the performance of the 4 treatments under the three criteria, a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life Cycle Cost (LCC) are carried out. Now, when I want to integrate all the information that I have (qualitative and quantitative) with MCDM I get confused. I have all these data from the LCA and LCC but then TOPSIS and AHP use the nine points scale. So, this is what I understand I have to do (but I am not sure): in TOPSIS, the decision matrix is filled with my data from LCA and LCC, but then because in TOPSIS all the criteria have the same weight I use AHP to evaluate each alternative with specific criteria in a comparison matrix. So in TOPSIS with the decision matrix I find out the best treatment (for example, among all the four treatment the best is gasification) and with the AHP with the comparison matrix I find out the best treatment for each criterion (for example, regarding environmental issues the best treatment is pyrolysis).

It looks like I use TOPSIS I reduce the subjectiveness (all the date from LCA and LCC) but then, in AHP I weight using the nine points scale that even when is based in the decision matrix, the comparison matrix is subjective (my criteria) again. So this confuses me.

Please let me know if you have papers related to this topic, I have read some but the methods are applied without a step by step explanation so it's hard to understand how the matrix is created, normalized and then compared to conclude.

Thank you in advance :)
