I have some undergraduate students who are willing to continue their master degrees. MBA is a two year program whereas data analytics is the new hot subject which lasts for only one year. In terms of job prospects the second one seems to more appealing. However, the annual cost of some data analytics programs are higher than the two-year cost of MBA. What is your suggestion?
The answer rests with the students, what they want and value more - money or knowledge and experience. There is indeed a boom in data analytics, but imagine how they will perform data analysis without undergoing the process and understanding the holistic picture of organisations. In the absence of theoretical knowledge and practical experience, they will just become data operators and not data analysts. They will learn about statistical techniques, but when to apply, why to use them will demand some theoretical and practical exposure which comes with undergoing 2-year classwork. As most of the MBA programmes nowadays offering part of data analysis in their syllabus too. After completing the MBA, they could join some crash course/ short term course if they still wish to pursue data analytics.

Osman Gulseven again you can look at the candidates who are pursuing the MBA degree program, from a developing country's perspective most of students who engage in MBA programme offered for one year specialising in general accounting, marketing, HR, taxation and this is easy to do with the current work and family responsibilities, such students do not opt for research related subjects and mostly prefer assignment based tasks.
However, students who wish to pursue a career in academics ought select 2 year MBA with research program as it carries more credit and it would be an easy route to follow PhD later on.
