Hey,
i want to simulate a composite pressure vessel (carbon fiber reinforced) in ANSYS Workbench. I dont have any data regarding the shear strength of the material, on the other hand i know, that the vessel will not fail due to shear stress. When using the "Tsai-Wu" failure criterion, should i type in the value for shear strength as 0? Or should i use a very high value? I am not sure, since in Tsai-Wu all the failure modes are mixed and i want the influence of shear to be as small as possible.

There are no specific material properties of CFRP. If you are able to conduct some material characterisation test - then you would have your own database. Other than that, you can simply follow any previous research/literature and try to replicate their model first (to verify that it's working for you), and if successful include those material properties for your composite pressure vessel model.
Thank you for all the answers and papers, yes we have conducted Experiments and i know the stress limits in longitudinal and transverse direction. I am unsure about the shear strength valus though, can i calculate those analytically with the strength values i already have?
If not, can i just neglect those in ANSYS by putting a very high value, if i know, that the vessel wont fail due to shear? (for example with Hashin criterion)

(sig^2+3*tau^2)^0.5=yield strength, so then max_tau = (yield strength)/(3^0.5)
Is it OK? But, Misses rule with sig together tau is better. Zdenek
