Dear all,

I am very much interested in moving SHM forward from attaching sensors to a structure to gather and evaluate data hours, days or weeks later to true material integration: The complete sensor network within the material, the information relevant in the context of a concrete application to be available in real time.

There certainly is a lot of work being done along these lines, but my feeling is that it is spread over several disciplines and thus widely dispersed.

Together with colleagues from Bremen, Stanford and Taiwan, I am currently putting together a Special Issue of the IEEE Sensors Journal entitled "Material-integrated Sensing". There is a Call for Papers open until August 31st, 2013 (The document is attached - please note, though, that the IEEE website still has the older version giving June 30th as deadline: This will hopefully be corrected soon).

It would be great if you would consider submitting your work in the field to this Special Issue. Besides, I'd be happy about any comments on relevance and main challenges in this field of research as they present themselves from your perspective.

In case of questions, don't hesitate to contact me, and I'll try to help.

Best regards,

Dirk Lehmhus
