I cannot feel bound by 'join the consensus that I found in almost all the answers to your question. I can only add one thing regarding my case: though it tends to "distance myself from the real world", I have to contact with it every day through my work as a physician. And then, I realize that almost all of my research can have an immediate effect in the everyday world and in my clinical practice. This really helps my research and my research really helps my approach to practice.

To put Humans and individuals in "boxes" could lead to prejudgements and sometimes intolerance from others because of fears when they don't know how science is conducted and applied in the society.

A question could also be : are we with this traits of characters or did we transform during our education ?

When we studied, during our scholarship, we had some easiness or skills in some fields; so we went on these ways, less difficult for us, and also we had some pleasure for that.

We developped our capacity and training for that, we increased our skills.

But at the beginning, we could choose other way and our personality is not restricted to these domains.

For my personal example, I would also become a musician or a painter.

For me, what is described are perhaps the necessary skills to develop to be more efficient in a special 'jobs' (science, artitistic ...), and when our personal skills correspond, we are more efficient . But I agree that , even if we had different possibilities in the past, when we only use certain skills, it can little as little change our personality to restrain it to some character traits (like when we practice or no more practice sport :-).

But some great researchers used (or use) not only what is described as defining a scientist in example, but also imagination, dreams in their work; and I think that's important to be imaginative. Einstein said that he had the vision of his theories first in dreaming, sleeping or awoke.

Dear Miranda: I believe myself to be investigative personality and that is the reason why I am here. To be a researcher you should have the ability to investigate, rationally think about the outcome, and have the necessary scholarly ability to explain things whether they follow the expected trend or not. This undoubtedly requires that the researcher enjoys reading, understanding theories, technology, and should not fear the unknown.

Friends, the statements that I quoted from the link, do not have to always apply to every researcher equally. Some researchers are friendly an do not distance themselves at all. I think that the characteristics may describe some people well, but even the same person may be subject to differences, and may show a wide range of moods and characteristics. Dear Miranda, I enjoyed the test. My personality appears to be very balanced and at ease both in solitude and in company. However, I would not have difficulty in to relate with others, nor to understand their problems. This strongly agrees with your last statement (Some researchers are friendly and do not distance themselves at all. I think that the characteristics may describe some people well, but even the same person may be subject to differences, and may show a wide range of moods and characteristics). A final consideration: the researcher must interact with young people and prepare them to become scientists (or in my case even practitioners). Therefore, the capacitance of isolating is okay if married to "team up" with students.

Being researcher is a mental state, not a profession....

Like most contributors I also drive my research through investigative attitude. We first observe some interesting findings and then try to uncover the mystery behind it. Sometimes it could happen that while trying to find a mystery, the investigation itself opens lot more new avenues to look at. That again compel us to propose new hypothesis driven research and further investigation.

I consider my personality to be investigative type because I enjoy research and scientific activities also I am curious about everything and want to know the science and logic behind everything. I like to collect every sort of information in every areas of science and technology.

I do not want to exhaust the subject, but never found a definitive text on types of researchers.

I believe there are, as in any field, those more focused to daily and repetitive work without creation. While others are not bound to rules and prefer broader thoughts.

I think these two personality types are equally useful, and it is impossible to distinguish one as better or worse. The creators can use the time to create because they can rely on those who do repetitive work.

I do not see my life without devoting much time to new ideas.

There are several books around on this subject, but you are right: it has not yet developed into a discipline of its own. Famous is Maslow's book on "Psychology of Scoence". A book with the same title has recently (2011) appeared in the Netherlands, in Dutch, with the subtitle: "Creativity, Serendipity, the Personal Factor and the Social Context". Highhly recommended!

I think that first, the question has to be asked directly to administrators, to know if they respond or not about their implication (there is a function for that in homepage , for communication). Because there is also the possibility of some hackers who coundn't be happy of this website (whatever the initial reasons) and could destroy little as little some accounts.

I have noticed recently in a "question shared" that suddently, there was a downvote for all responses of all persosn; that doesn't seem very coherent because if a person doesn't like a question, he could downvote the one who created it.

So, before activating a "plot theory" (all humans are sensible to that), we have to know reasons for that.

Maybe it's more important to uphold and practice our ethics, and guard and mold our character. Because, first of all we are humans and accountable to our creator.
