Spirituality in the workplace.
doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.1108/09534819910282126
By Burack, Elmer H.
Journal of Organizational Change Management, Vol 12(4), 1999, 280-291.
The rapid growth of spirituality in the workplace and organization generally, topically and applications, is of major importance for enterprise leaders, HR officials, organizational members and change agents. After providing a working definition of "workplace spirituality" some of the dynamic factors are identified which are contributing to its fast growth. This discussion includes some of the key behavioral ideas and models providing a foundation for these developments. Several case type summaries illustrate the richness and potency of spirituality applications in organizations. The concluding section provides a brief speculative discussion of future developments. African American professionals: Coping with occupational stress in predominantly White work environments.
doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.1006/jvbe.1998.1640
By Holder, Judith C.; Vaux, Alan
Journal of Vocational Behavior, Vol 53(3), Dec 1998, 315-333.
Mail survey data from 112 African American professionals working in predominantly White work settings (human service and business) were examined to test hypotheses regarding the potential influences on job satisfaction of routine and race-related work stressors, personal workplace spirituality, internal locus of control, and work-related and nonwork related social resources. No significant differences of these variables were observed for type of work setting or for gender. Consistent with predictions, job satisfaction was related to routine work stressors, race-related stressors, internal locus of control, and work-related social support, but not to workplace spirituality or nonwork social support. Evidence was limited for predictions based on the buffer model: in only a few tests did personal and social resource variables moderate the relation between stressors and job satisfaction. Findings are discussed in relation to minority work stress. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved)
Spirituality in management education.
doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.1108/13665629810236417
By Boozer, Robert W.
Journal of Workplace Learning, Vol 10(6-7), 1998, 345-347.
This paper suggests themes and specific questions that may be used as a foundation for discussion about the role of spirituality in management education. The discussion should both explore basic questions such as "What is workplace spirituality?" and examine current educational practices and the emerging literature about workplace spirituality which provides a framework for pedagogy. Spirituality is, no doubt, a depression protecting factor. Spirituality is the certainty to belong to the universe. In the modern industrial world it is required to be autonomous and not dependent on an other higher power.
In reality, religious people have more mentally health protecting factors. So it is good to have the possibility to live the own beliefs, even on workplace. But it looses healthy effectiveness, if it ist instrumentalized for profit increase.
I think we've argued that workplace spirituality is a precursor to positive outcomes and health and well being. Please see attached. Hope this is helpful. The second paper is forthcoming in the American Journal of Health Promotion.
work place spirituality is really a positive construct as long as it do not mix with religion. Head of the institution should be alert to possible intermixing. For that he should know where spirituality begins, what is the role of religion in spirituality, who is likely to misinterpret spirituality and religion and in what all ways....
It's important to keep in mind that not only is spirituality, as a construct, very culturally dependent (and it covers so broad a range of things that it can become almost meaningless unless very carefully and explicitly defined) but that the effects of spirituality are also culturally dependent as group values and norms are not universal. To answer the question fully it is necessary to know what is being meant by (workplace) spirituality and how that interacts with the values and conventions of the culture being studied.
A few recent studies that demonstrate how nebulous the concept of Spirituality is include: Keller et al., 2013, ‘The Semantics of Spirituality and related self-identifications: A comparative study in Germany and the USA’ (doi:10.1163/15736121-12341254); La Cour et al., 2012, ‘Six understandings of the word spirituality in a secular country’ (doi: 10.1163/157361212x649634) and Berghujilis et al., 2013, ‘Spirituality in the Dutch Population’ (doi: 10.1163/15736121-12341272). There is quite a lot more literature on the subject but those papers provide a good overview of the current state of research.
Spirituality (not religion) as art, sensitivity, creativity, and the elevation of thought, do well to those who have it and those who receive it. Always. Why should it be different in a workplace?
