Is thin layer chromatography used in medicine companies?
In my school, after aspirin synthesis for our organic chemistry experiment, we are going perform TLC for analysis...
I know that this is a basic school experiment; what I want to know is if medicine companies still use this TLC for any analysis as I think it is very very old. I think we are using this as we are beginners.

herbal Medicinal Industries are still using TLC method on plants extract for assay purpose of alkaloids detections. but allopathic medicinal companies are mostly using HPLC and FTIR for assay purposes.
TLC is generally used to monitor reactions. It is the fastest method by which you can tell if a compound underwent a reaction or degradation or if the compound is pure or impure. TLC is not used for characterization of compounds. There are many other methods for such purposes such as NMR. FTIR, LC-MS, elemental analysis and x-ray.
In addition PLC (preparative liquid chromatography) plates are still used to separate small quantities of compound. Reverse PLC plates are also used in the cases where separation of polar compound is needed.
To my knowledge, every lab in the world including those in medicine industries has and use TLC.

Hi, I agree with Hifza and Rafik, I think every lab in (Phyto)-Pharmaceutical Industries still used TLC/HPTLC and mostly equipped by Densitometer. I prefer used HPTLC-densitometry for certain samples because the cost for analyses is relatively cheaper compared to HPLC-DAD.
Please see the database TLC Camag, there are plenty of application of TLC/HPTLC for the determination of (herbal) drugs.
