That is a very interesting question. Perhaps a good place to start would be to look at career analysis instruments such as the Eureka transferable skills card sort. These attempt to match multidimensional competences against roles.
It may be not precisely what your are looking. But the framework of symbolic interactionism I always admired the work of Eliot Freidson. It still is a wonderful starting point to explore significations and implications of professionalism. It also creates a link between professionalism and knowledge construction.

You might look at a chapter that I co-authored with Dr. Mickey Bebeau from the University of Minnesota on Professional Identity Formation. We utilize moral development theory -- Rest's Four Component Model -- in defining different elements of Professional Identity Formation across the lifespan.
