Yes, of course there is interest in eliminating viruses that cause diseases in plants - a typical example is for potato, where many countries have virus certification schemes for seed tuber production. Viruses can be eliminated by meristem tip culture followed by checking to make sure there is no virus present, then bulking up under conditions where insect vectors are minised.
We have been working to generate virus-free plants of cassava, yam and banana at IITA. We can share our experiences; also interested in trying new molecules in chemotherapy for virus elimination.
