My research involves routine analysis of a plethora of pharmaceutical compounds. I prefer using a 150mm 5um C18 column. But, everytime I tend to analyze a new compound I am stuck trying various HPLC columns. This ends up in a tedious process.

While the first article always kindles a light of hope, the second puts me in dilemma and every other article I read thereafter puts me in a confusion in choosing the right column for my analysis. Each article provides me a different column and a different solvent system.

My question is do we really have an universal column that suits all compounds? Especially in the scenario of ever increasing cost of the branded columns and the decreasing research grants, its hard to influence my supervisor to order new columns.
