Two years ago, Zhang et al. found mitophagy or autophagy for mitochondria is protective in the reperfusion phase, while deleterious in the earlier ischemia phase. But at that time, seemingly they didn't give explicit explanation for that discrepency. So recently I wonder, to date is there any attempt to unravel the puzzle?

Under ischemic (or essentially hypoxic) conditions, mitochondria produce increased levels of ROS, which in turn damage mitochondria themselves, forming a vicious cycle if unmitigated. Mitophagy, which removes defective mitochondria, can be seen in part as a cellular response to this.
Regulation of mitophagy is better described in some neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases.
