I want to prepare CuO nanoparticles in side poly vinyl alcohol network. When ever i am trying to react copper ions in PVA solution with naOH, I am getting Green precipitate.This is copper hydroxidce but not CuO. May I know if some body had any solution to prevent this and getting nanoparticles.
If I remember rightly, when you do this precipitation reaction (without the polymer), you have to drip the hydroxide into the copper salt solution slowly until the pH reaches ~14 to prevent the hydroxide forming. Are you adding it all in one shot?
The copper salt start material also makes a big difference. Looking at the literature, copper nitrate seems to give the best results.
The first thing I'd do, is check that I can make the desired copper oxide with my reagents in the absence of the polymer. Otherwise, you can't be sure the polymer isn't catalysing an alternative synthetic route.
Dear Andrew. Thank you very much for the reply. In fact, Initially I tried the CuO ( i used CuSO4 and copper acetate mono hydrate as precursor for nano) preparation with out Polymer. In that case I was 100% Success and i got clear nanosloution. Where as in the polymer case I am getting this green precipitate.May be the OH groups from polymer gives this hydroxide. If you any idea please inform me.
Is it possible to precipitate the particles and then wrap them in the polymer? That is how I used to make hollow silica particles with metal oxide cores.
Is your PVA Polyvinyl alcohol? You could try it in polyvinyl acetate instead (no hydroxide groups).
If you have CuO nanoparticles and active surfactant, why not modify the particles with PVA and remove the dispersion medium (similar as performed for ZnO in the publication)
