Hello, Phytoremediation of pollutants in soils is an emerging technology, using different soil-plant interaction properties. It occurs mostly through an increase of the microbial activity in the plant rhizosphere, allowing the degradation of organic substances, a source of carbon for soil microbes.
To employ phytoremediation effectively for heavy metals reduction depends among others on pollutant distribution. If contaminated aquifer is in big depth (e.g. 7 to 10 m), phytoremediation of groundwater is not possible at all. It means the pollutant distribution must be evaluated at first and then the design of phytoremediation can be prepared.

Although plants can contribute to biorremediation of polluted soils, its use and approach would depend on the type of pollution.
Phytorremediation of organic toxic substances is generally linked to the role of microbal communities in the rizosphere, which can be able of transforming the pollutants into non-toxic substances. There, the role of plant is providing resources for the development of the bacterial degraders (phytostimulation), although some plants can also degrade several toxic organic compounds by themselves (e.g. some explosives and pesticides), which is known as phytodegradation. . Furthermore, plants can also contribute to the removal of these substances by phytovolatilization, where these are removed from the soil to the atmosphere, and this occurs for several organic pollutants as well as toxic metals and metaloids (mercurium, selenium). Some plants can also accumulate heavy metals in several parts (leaves, roots), then harvesting these parts that has concentrated metals reduces the concentration of heavy metals in the soil-plant system (rizofiltration and phytoextraction). Finally, even not removing the pollutants, some plants can create a environment around their roots that contribute to the estabilization of pollutants (phytostabilization), for instance, heavy metals whose solubility (mobilization) is related to soil pH, which can be modified by plant exudates.
