In the analysis of slender column subjected to eccentric loading, normally iterative method like one proposed by Newmark (1943) and cranston (1979) is adopted. We used to develop our own matlab coding to reiteratively calculate the p-delta curves. However, is there any similar built in function in matlab to facilitate us in slender column analysis?

This a very specialized application. As you know, these methods are generally discussed in a graduate course in structural engineering (stability of structures).

As you know, the finite difference method can be used iteratively to solve slender members with nonlinear moment-curvature relationships. I, and many others, have programmed the method for different end restraint There is also a finite difference routine in Matlab that is useful also in slender member analysis. In a recent paper, a coauthor and myself adopted the MATLAB program bvp4c, which is a finite difference code that implements the three-stage Lobatto IIIa formula. As far as i concerned, we still need to develop the coding even with the finite difference routine in Matlab and bvp4c, am I right? In the paper you mentioned, is it dealing with non-linear columns? It would be useful if you could share the said paper to me. Thanks in advanced.

You do not have to develop the the details of the finite difference coding, but you need to adapt bvp4c program to your special case. For the study of principles in our case, we just specified a nonlinear moment-curvature relationship similar to one typical for a reinforced concrete section. In practical cases, you will have to compute it numerically for the actual section and axial force. I have made the paper available on RG. If you should decide to consider using the Matlab routine, and if you encounter problems, I think contacting Prof. Challamel will be helpful. He is the one having detailed knowledge of the bvp4c program. Mine is very superficial ;-)
