I would recommend cuff electrodes which will give you recording from more axons and it will be less invasive than penetrating metal electrodes. Cuff electrodes will therefore give you also longer recording times.

Do you prepare your cuff electrodes in-house or do you buy them - in which case, is there a specific cuff electrode you would recommend for the rat sciatic nerve?

It depends what you are aiming to do. In our experience cuffs are good enough to record and stimulate a large number of fibers. With penetrating electrodes, you could be a bit more specific though still you wouldn't know where you are until after histology.
