I am looking to synthesize POCl3 from PCl5 and B(OH)3. I believe this to be an industrially used process, but I cannot find any recipes for preparation. Any help would be very much appreciated! Thank you.
I think more straight forward is the reaction of PCl5 with P2O5. Also the oxidation of PCl3 with oxygen is an option. Below you will find a link to a patent which describes the purification of POCl3. The best method is distillation over a high boiling nitrogen compound like quinoline.
That material is very easily purchased and readily available . It is a very reactive and toxic compound and it is not worth the risk to make and purify it.
I would go with the opinion of Dr. William Harter regarding the high toxicity of this compound being lacrematory, suffocating, skin irritant and highly reactive .... the safest way is to purchase it
If you do try to purify POCl3 by distillation, keep in mind that the material is very corrosive and efficient traps and scrubbers must be used to prevent damage to the vacuum pump.
