I am wanting to conduct an in vitro degradation study of some hydrogels in the presence of the enzyme, but I don't have Brij-35 in stock. Am I able to use a different surfactant, such as Triton X-100?
The commercial designation 'Brij 35' (or 'Bri L23)', stands for polyethylene glycol dodecyl ether, also named polyoxyethylene (23) lauryl ether, or Laureth-23, with formula C12H25(OCH2CH2)nOH, n~23 (C12E23). Its Hydrophile-Lipophile Balance (HBL) number, which assists on the selection of possible alternative surfactant(s), is ~16.5. Seemingly possible alternative surfactant(s) should, after considering just this selection criterium, be selected among those of comparable HLB, such as 'Brij CS25' (Ceteareth-25), with HLB = 16.2 (*). Alternative surfactant(s) should also be checked for its possible effect on matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activity and/or stability.
