Certainly Conference papers are a faster way to advertise ones' research. However, a problem with conference papers is that at many places, papers published as conference proceedings are not accepted for promotion, yet in some places where it is accepted for promotion it is given less credit than a article published in a journal.
In Croatia it can be a part of your scientific evaluation, but journal publishing is much more important. So if you have only or majority of coference papers, you can't get pro.otion, even if the proceedings are indexed. It is perceived that the criteria for conference papers are sig ificantly lower than for journal articles.
If your presentation is published in the proceedings of the conference, it could be considered as a scholarly piece of work. However, Journal publications would determine tenure.
Presentation in a conference is a more rapid way of reporting research works than publishing articles in journals. However, presentation of a piece of scientific work in a conference in oral or poster form cannot be equated with a written paper on the subject in a reputed journal. Scientists and research students are often attracted to conferences because of the attraction of easy acceptance of their papers.
Many ‘conference proceedings’ are normally not subjected to peer review, and because of any real quality control, ‘proceedings paper’ fetches less credit compared to a regular journal article. However, both oral and poster presentations in such conferences can be used to report ongoing works.
I think presentation of research work in conference aside the fact that the purpose, results and conclusions of the research are disseminated, it provides room for evaluation and contributions of research prior to final dissemination in a peer review journal.
in Nigeria, particularly in my institution, conference paper are considered for promotion alongside with journal papers.
Of course there is a difference and these are given by the category and impact of your work. At the same time, in many institutions, publication in journals rather than in Congresses is rewarded. A journal assures you a strict double-blind arbitration. In a Congress there is only one scientific committee that in most cases accepts almost all the postulated works. Publishing your work in a Congress is fine, but publishing it in a magazine is much better. The magazine ensures you greater visibility and category to your work, at the same time other researchers can quote your work from a journal. Your resume will look much better having published in a journal than in a Congress.
