When writing my own research, I needed to quote a paragraph from a research X published in 2016. When I read the paper, X i found this paragraph is taken from research Y published in 2010. The question is when I write the references do I refer to the research X or Y
Thanks to everyone who contributed to the discussion of this question, but there is still some ambiguity. I am with the logical views that I should cite paper Y , But Most researchers are satisfied with going back a step in reading the research to make it a reference that most often just cite paper X
Not only cite the original, but go find the original and confirm the validity of what is attributed to it.
Some authors occasionally write "_____ a cited in ______", but this is really inadequate, unless the original is absolutely not available.
certainly the original one should be cited. the main source should be studied to ensure that the view cited is the main author's view not the second one's interpretation.
If your citation was for the results or conclusion of the article X, you should cite it, otherwise the paragraph is belong to the article Y.

Secondary reference
From time to time, you might find evidence of other research cited in the source you are reading. A secondary reference is when you quote or paraphrase from a source which is mentioned in another text. If you do happen to use a secondary reference in your essay or dissertation, you need to include in the in-text reference both the source you have read, and the one where you are indirectly referring to their work. The latter is called a secondary source. The author’s surname and year of publication for the secondary source is presented first in an in-text reference, followed by the word ‘cited’, to show that it is cited in another source. The same information is then given for the source which you have read, known as the original source. An example of an in-text reference with an original and secondary source is provided underneath.
Longitudinal research into this subject is limited and often carried out on a small-scale level, making wider generalizations difficult (Payne, 2003, cited in White, 2007, p. 168).
I don't agree with most answers. You should cite what you have read. It is not up to you whether to cite X or Y, it is a matter of traditions and rules of academic writing. You have found the paragraph in X because X had read and done hard work in reading Y, so you should use the paragraph and mention that it was cited in X. But the question is did X document the right source or did it say that the paragraph is its own?
