The two main properties of a meta-analytic estimator should be robustness (less error) and reliability (correct error estimation). The SAS code below proves that the random effects estimator fails on both counts when compared to a fixed effect estimator (IVhet). Why on eearth then do we use it?. The first four lines set the OR, heterogeneity (minimum zero), number of studies and number of iterations respectively. The results are shocking and suggest that biostatistics may have grossly failed the research community! Any thoughts welcome!
