As far as I was involved in, there will be self-driving cars but these cars will not be the conventional cars we are driving now. The concept will evolve into smart mobility devices.
Not yet but it's already on the researchers and politicians agenda. I am involved in a research on autonomous vehicles research, in the G20 summit 2 yrs back in Europe already talked about new cities completely built for autonomous vehicles, highways covered with WiFi communication and connected to transportation centers.
To me, it is possible up to the level of lunching mobility devices via interface from stationary platform. However., this dream is prohibitively costly and unsafe. A simple example is DRONE, which violating security issues using via media and unsafe violent and irresponsible use by fighters for killing innocents. Pros & cons of such little cars are here: https://www.autoinsuresavings.org/smart-cars-pros-cons/
This is a very interesting question. Even though there is an important technological progress for self driving cars, I don't think their deployment is for the very soon!
