What is composition of the most external layer of the capsid? Of course it could depend on the phage type. However, does someone know if there are specific studies with a given phage or group of phages?

i do think that capsid morphology vary from family to family. Since they are reported to have charged groups on their surface , even used for functionalization, i think they are hydrophilic.

Beside taxonomy (as you pointed out), it would depend on the pH of your buffer.
