I have a question that remind a long time. I want to make CFD analysis (Fluent) with porous media to determine the pressure drop on the strainer filter.Therefore I have to find viscous resistance and permeability value. I don't have any experimental data that include velocity versus pressure drop. Can I approcah viscous resistance and permeability value with Ergun Equation ? If not, Have you anny suggest for that ?
There is published info on pressure drop through screens and perforated plates. I have seen in extrusion literature, so I know it exists.

Mind you, Ergun equation (with its famous constants 150 and 1,75) presupposes newtonian fluids, isotropic and incompressible porous media, with a known length, in absence of gravitational forces (the porous media axis should be horizontal). In this case, pressure drop is due only to viscous effects. The trouble with filtration is that the solid deposit (the appropriate name is cake) continuously increases thickness and, depending mainly on the pressure drop imposed, is frequently compressible. Particle’s size, shape and chemical nature also affect the cake compressibility. Once a small thickness of cake is deposited onto the strainer, the Ergun equation should hold instantaneously. In practice, the type of pump used affects the process.
RE: nonNewtonian fluids. It's rather simple to rederive the ergun equation in laminar flow for power law fluids. Answers exist in literature.
