I am estimating a choice experiment model, but i don't know which software is better, the nlogit software or the stata software. different studies have been using either nlogit or stata and there is no information about which one is better to use. if you have any comments or suggestions please let me know. thanks.
Any of the packages mentioned would be a good choice, another one you might want to consider is R (http://www.r-project.org/), which is a free package used by many people. Personally I use Stata for most things, on a daily basis, and have been using it for about 10 years. I have used NLOGIT a few times and also BIOGEME a few times. I started learning R but have not progressed very far because Stata does nearly everything I need. NLOGIT and BIOGEME are useful to have available because they have tools to do specific types of analysis that are not available within the standard Stata installation. If I was starting from scratch I think I would invest more time in learning R, I have heard many good things about it.
Stata is a comprehensive statistical package, so you can do a huge amount with it, not just analysis but data manipulation and management. As a skill, it's probably better to have expertise in a widely-used package like Stata, SAS or R than in a niche market package. Stata has a very strong presence in the econometric literature, which is probably another bonus.
On the other hand, if there's a local nlogit guru or user community to assist you when you run into problems, that's an argument in its favour. Of course, the Stata discussion list (now a web forum) is a very helpful and friendly place, and very tolerant of questions from beginners.
I agree with Conrad. Stata is a more robust software. In analysis of binary models, I have found Stata more comprehensive and you can make more meaningful deductions from your analysis.
