As I have seen publications with 2 and 4 levels RSM-CCD DOE. I will like to know if such designs are valid.

In general, RSM used only with five levels (CCD) or three levels (BB). on the other hand Taguchi method, you can control the number of levels

Design Expert allows you to make an "Optimal" response surface. With these designs, you can choose the number of levels for each factor, use categorical and continuous factors at the same time too. These designs might look like a CCD, but they are not.

Are you saying such designs are called CCD? Because that would be the only logical reason why reputable journals published stuff like that.
CCD in RSM normaly has 5 levels but it can be changed to be in 3 levels in a special mode which is called "face centered". You can get it by changing Alpha to value 1 .
The CCD in RSM only allows you to use 3 or 5 levels. Otherwise, use "Historical data" design.

@ Foram, if you have 3 factors, I suggest you go for BB design with FC, and if you have up to 5 factors you can use CCD with FC. By the way, which DOE software are using?
You can use FCCD by restricting alpha value to 1 which will give 3 levels for each factor.
If you want to go with 5 levels, better to use MiniTab software.@Jimmy Lolu Olajide
