In Canada rifaxamin is not available for treatment/prevention of Clostridium difficile infection. The drug has to be obtained through the special access program from health canada (government). Anyone know why we can't get access for this indication but we can for hepatic encephalopathy? Is it similar in other countries where rifaximin is not a marketed drug? Is it health canada or the manufacturer putting up the road blocks?
It is available by prescription in the United States, but it is not FDA approved for that indication. It would be considered off label prescribing, which is commonly done in the U.S.
Same in Australia - available but off label. In general, the sponsor has to apply for an indication and provide supporting evidence, and I'm only aware of one small clinical trial supporting the use of rifaxamin (Garey AAC 2011).
its available every where in our country (Pakistan) without any restrictions on its use for any indication , but luckily we do not have that no of Cdiff as documented in the west and practically speaking I cant recall a relapse in the last 2 years in a bulk hospital.
Rifaximin is a safe treatment for C. difficile infection. It has a reasonable effect in C. difficile infection and it can be considered as an optional treatment for recurrent C. difficile infection this pulished in article in Aliment Pharmacol Ther. 2013 Jan .
