I believe the prior knowledge of the person who's judging/reviewing your manuscript is the main determinant of your paper to be called as a novel and be accepted/rejected in any journal for publication! What do you think? What's a "novelty" for you after all?
Haile - true enough. Reviewing can often be a subjective process. What you and I would call novel may well be two different things. Novelty, to me, is a unique insight - even if it is an area that is well researched. It is something that is 'creative' i.e. 'sits outside of the conventional box'.
Dean Whitehead - Your comments remind me of Joseph Campbell, noted scholar on the subject of mythology.
Campbell said that "creativity" can be defined as "innovation."
That's a good thought, Sir, My opinion: Novelty is rational new research, its a point in research that leads to innovation. Forcefully finding Novelty and justifying with illogical associations to make our research fit in the frame of novelty is questionable and subjective.
Novelty in research can be deemed as:
1) Some thing totally new to change the world.
2) Addition of new power, upgrades, polishing and linking the existing work to the current applications according to to users requirements.
3) Purpose of publishing in Journals/Articles/Conferences/Workshops is just to share work with the related research community, and possibly to get some credit or appreciation/suggestions/comments as well.
I generally try to add novelty to my topic study if ethical consumption by adding a new variable found out qualitatively by an author into my quantitative research.Lately I am trying to study the impact of Justification of unethical behaviour on purchse intention.The problem is that the jsutification of unethical behaviour was found by Dr Rusell Belk through a qualitative paper so its scale is still yet not developed.Thus to test the impact of this variable if purchase intention it is crucial to make a scale for this.novelty
Novelty can be objective with the evidence of a unique design to investigate the solution for difficult problems; it can also be subjective when values are taken into account of the subject topic confining within the research scope.
