I am a Doctoral Student, currently exploring/working on Joint Ventures.
Investigating this area, and also the field of strategy; I figured out with the help of my thesis adviser: that non rational thinking/strategy is very prevalent; but rarely acknowledged by scholars and practicing managers alike.
I wanted to work on this area in Joint Ventures and give conceptual clarity and also highlight a) Meaning of Rational and Non Rational Decision making b) Role of R and NR Thinking and the importance of Trust and Commitment among the Parent Firms and the JV Top Management in a successful business alliance.
The definitions of Rational Decision-making are aplenty; however I wanted to add that any decision based on previous experience also can be termed rational. If a decision is taken by using accumulated knowledge of the company by either a) Learning by discovery (non intended/non rational learning) or b) Intended Learning. Knowledge helps identify certain cues and on the basis of this cue it can be called rational decision if a decision is taken on the basis of previous experience. However, a decision could be termed as non rational when it is based eith in hope, faith or when it is taken without previous experience of the parent firms or the JV.
Just wanted to discuss this...
