The emerging hybrid science Neuro Design uses the growing new insights in Neuroscience to the field of a human centric design, which the human understand easily and is pleased by get in touch with it. Design is driven by design gurus, which follow their intuition and successfully establish a new way of thinking about design. Will Neuro Design allow to get on a more objective level to implement a good design solution? Or will Neuro Design only be able to nudge the designer a bit in the right direction and at the end any situation requires even new design rules, which cannot be answered out of the box only from Neuro Design? Or is the last step to adapt Neuro Design Insights to an effective solution for the situation in place, just the normal critics on any applied scientific method, due to our human biases. We use scientific methods and their criticism to overcome human subjective judgment and human biases.
Dear Kersten Ulrich Vogel , neurodesign is the application of neuroscientific knowledge to design. In this sense, I think it should be considered an art based on science, not a science itself. If, for example, a designer knows from neuroscience that certain materials or colours have a relaxing effect, he/she can decide to use this information to obtain a desidered effect. The knowledge used is based on science, but the way of combining the chosen elements is still an art. And personally I think it should remain such. Often we choose an object not only because it is functional and practical, but also because it is aesthetically satisfying (even if sometimes this means using a less practical object). Regarding interior design, should a bedroom be designed only to perfectly serve the scope of sleeping well? Or should there be left space for purely subjective aesthethic factors? In fashion, when designing garments, should we consider only how practical and efficient they are or is there space for simple artistic creation? If there was not, it would become like designing a space suit.
The answer to your question depends on what type of design we are speaking about. For example neuroergonomics, which studies brain activity and behavioural performance in everyday life settings or work environments, is actually a science. But other types of design are not. They are an art, which additionally can choose to be based on neuroscience or not.
