During repair of concrete structure, I understand that it is not necessary to remove mechanically sound concrete though contaminated while repairing a structure if Impressed Current Cathodic System would be installed since corrosion would be stopped immediately after its installation. But for sacrificial anodes, I need to be cleared if it is not necessary to remove those contaminated concrete too?
The answer is not a straight no or yes. It depends on the effectiveness of the galvanic system you are installing. For example, point anodes, embedded in concrete, will generally deliver less current than a surface-mounted system (such as metalizing). In addition, sacrificial systems have an expected lifetime that Is typically much less than ICCP. The ultimate answer depends on the economics of repair now with the CP system vs. deferring that repair a number of years down the road.
There are other options to consider in parallel with the cathodic system: chloride ions extraction from the sound concrete, the use of waterproofing membranes to eliminate the root cause of the problem: moisture, chloride, and oxygen ingress in the system. You can use cathodic protection in synergy with conventional wisdom to reduce corrosion. Something to consider using your engineering judgment.
