A waste generated by one industry if used as raw-material for the other it could surely reduce the load on the bulk of waste generated daily. Rather than labeling something as discard or waste- one has to see if it could have some usefulness. Like some of the industrial or agricultural discard could serve as potential sorbents capable of bioremediating inorganic as well as organic waste through biosorption or phytoremediation. These techniques would not only reduce the bulk of generated waste they could also serve to recover/recycle certain substances say metals that could be reused. Landfilling coupled with methanogenesis under proper monitoring could yield methane gas.
Some of this basic research is carried out at academic level. Need of the hour is to have industry-academia tie ups so that research in labs transforms to handling real life problems and finding solutions rather than just degrees and thesis.

Design of solid-waste management systems requires consideration of multiple alternative solutions and evaluation criteria because the systems can have complex and conflicting impacts on different stakeholders. Multiple criteria decision analysis (MCDA) has been found to be a fruitful approach to solve this design problem. The systematic approach of MCDA helps decision makers select the most preferable decision and provides the basis of a decision support system. The techniques that are used in this study include: 1) Simple Weighted Addition method, 2) Weighted Product method, 3) TOPSIS, 4) cooperative game theory, and 5) ELECTRE. Waste can be evaluated by applying the novel techniques of bioremediation, biosorption, bionanotechnology. Bioremediation utilises the inherent potential of iron reducing bacteria to detoxify the contaminants like radionuclides, heavy metals present in the oxidized form. Bacterial and fungal biomass and also plant wastes like corn cobs have the capacity to absorb the toxic metals which can be treated appropriately. Nanoparticles too have the capability to adsorb and aggregate the heavy metals from contaminated water. Using one of the methods according to the waste produced can help managing the waste profitably.
Yes it is possible to evaluate wastes. As we all know that wastes posses an environmental threat, it is very likely that several methods have developed and are also being modified based on needs. In general, chemical and biological methods are available. One one hand, the chemical methods have rapid action whereas the biological route have a slower but environmental friendly approach, on the other. Biological route of waste management have diverse applications on a same area of study. More and more emphasis is being given to this route for the benefits it provides.
When I was a teenager I read in an old book that waste is a resource in the wrong place. This fueled my interest in chemistry. However, I had learn that energetic viability is one important point here, i.e. the energy needed to separate.
