Is it possible to isolate DNA from bacteria (Streptococcus Uberis) using a Quick-DNA kit with the protocol for cell suspension or is that really necessary to use a specific Bacterial DNA kit for the isolation? Thanks!
Yes you can use the protocol for cell suspension. We have been using Qiagen DNA mini kit (routinely used for clinical specimens) for extracting DNA from bacterial suspensions and it works well.
We routinely isolate good quality bacterial gDNA using SDS-ProteinaseK-Phenol-Chloroform method. although cell suspension kit is expected to work, but yeild may be less due to the mild lysis methods used in the kit. You may check some samples on a pilot basis with the kit.
I think it will depend on the bacteria, as Sibnarayan mentioned many bacteria will not lyse efficiently with the cell suspension kit although some might. So if your results are not good you could add an extra lysis step, or you could just get the bacterial kit.
