Is it possible to dissolve wax in cold cholorform (at -20). The problem is my frozen samples (-20 C) burst when dissolved in choloroform at room temp ?
The main ingredient of "paraffin" wax is eicosane which is an alkane with the molecular formula C20H42. Eicosane is soluble in diethyl ether, petroleum ether, benzene; slightly soluble in chloroform; very soluble in acetone (Reference: Haynes, W.M. (ed.). CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics. 95th Edition. CRC Press LLC, Boca Raton: FL 2014-2015, p. 3-240 ).
My advice is to avoid chloroform & to use another solvent. There is no big problem when a solvent interact strongly with a solute but take care in carrying out dissolution in a fume cupboard.
